Hamburg – continuation of BiDiMoVe project

In August 2021, we successfully participated in a plug test of the BiDiMoVe project (Bidirektionale Multimodale Vernetzung – the project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure) – more here – held as part of ITS World Conress 2021. And we were the only ones to “integrate” direct communication between Trapeze’s on-board computer and our OBU (On Board Unit) – type UCU 5.0V – using the IBIS PLUS protocol and to implement public transport preference on this basis.


Following our successful plug test in 2021, an OBU manufactured by us was installed on a Hamburger Hochbahn AG bus as part of the continuation of the BiDiMoVe project in Hamburg. It currently provides preference at 9 intersections with RSUs from Swarco and Yunex. The unit is successfully connected to Trapeze’s on-board computer.

The project has the following basic characteristics:

  • Public transport preferences using SREM and SSEM messages
  • SREM reports are processed by a central system
  • SREMs are received by RSUs from Swarco/Yunex manufacturers and correctly answered by SSEM messages
  • Secure communication – the unit is registered in the BiDiMoVe PKI provided by Escrypt.
  • The OBU is connected to the on-board computer using the IBISPlus protocol. In this way it gets an overview of stops, line, connection number or current delay (SOAP interface).

Method of priority management:

In contrast to the public transport preference system operated by DPMB a.s. (Brněnské komunikace a.s.), the SREM report does not focus on a specific intersection within the BiDiMoVe project (local control support versus central control support). Instead, it is sent to all RSUs in the vicinity. The SREM message is populated with data about the current trip – e.g., line number, next stop, and delay. The RSU at the intersection forwards the SREM message with the above information to the central system. This generates a response to the RSU upon receipt of the priority request, which then generates the SSEM message and this is received by the OBU on the vehicle.

Communication via V2X enables many other services in addition to public transport preference. The city of Hamburg is investing heavily in this system so that it has a functioning and rich C-ITS system. When a vehicle with our OBU travels through the city, it receives various V2X messages. For example, it correctly handles messages with the intersection topology (MAPEM) and the signal plan of the traffic light controller (SPATEM). The result can be seen on the right: the OBU has correctly located itself in the lane of the intersection (green colored arrow) and is able to show the time on green:

  1. Top image – possible display on our on-board computer EPIS 4.0 or EPIS 5.0, where a passage warning appears on the on-board computer when approaching the junction. This allows the driver to adjust their driving speed by driving economically and possibly cancel the display.
  2. Middle image – is a visualisation from the UCU BOS software, which is designed to manage OBUs and RSUs, and which reads this information directly from the OBU on the vehicle and can display it to the SW operator.
  3. The lower image – is a real situation of a public transport bus passing at the intersection in Hamburg shown in the middle image (currently shown on the base). It shows the vehicle approaching the intersection.,

Using the experience of the RIS II project:

We are preparing a solution for the transition from the original public transport preference systems in Hamburg Verkehrsanlagen. It is inspired by the solution of the transition of preference systems in Dopravní podnik města Brna a.s. (DPMB) – RIS II project, i.e. we are preparing the so-called “transition” RSU. That is, it aims to enable priority for public transport and emergency vehicles (our experience from Ústí nad Labem and Brno) on an older traffic light controller – a controller that does not support V2X. In this way we can help in the phase of transition from analogue radio to V2X.
