EPIS 4.1
The EPIS 4.1 on-board computer is the new generation of universal control system, primarily for public transport vehicles, from 2025 onwards. It builds on the tried-and-tested EPIS 4.0 series and controls the vehicle’s information, ticketing, CCTV, communications and other systems. The powerful control unit is complemented by a driver’s touchscreen terminal, which is available in several sizes.
EPIS 4.1 system architecture
The system is based on a split-concept design: only the driver’s touchscreen terminal is located on the dashboard, whilst the rest of the electronics are housed in the vehicle’s technical compartments. It comprises the following components:
- EPC 4.1A control unit – a high-performance industrial PC with integrated power management and a digital alarm,
- EPT 4.xx driver’s touchscreen LCD terminal – available in 8" to 12.1" versions, connected via a single HDMI/DVI cable,
- communication unit – the UCU 6.0 (OBU) unit with V2X support,
- optional ticket validators, CCTV system and radio.
Key features
- Powerful platform – COM Express industrial PC with a quad-core processor, 8 GB RAM, SSD and Linux OS.
- Terminals to suit your needs – 8" to 12.1" capacitive touchscreen terminals for flush mounting or on a stand, optionally with a contactless card reader.
- Modern connectivity – 1 Gb/s Ethernet with PoE, USB 3.1, RS485, IBIS and the ITxPT protocol for third-party components.
- Intelligent power management – up to 5 switched power branches with electronic protection; ‘what isn’t in use is switched off’.
- Digital alarm with 4 independent outputs (to the vehicle, outside the vehicle, to the driver, for the visually impaired).
- Energy-saving standby mode with on-demand wake-up via LoRa, suitable for night-time data logging.
- Diagnostics – the system monitors communication with peripherals and detects faults, alerting the driver and recording them in the log.
On-board system functions
The EPIS 4.1 on-board computer software primarily provides:
- display of the journey according to the timetable, with stops synchronised via GPS,
- control of external and internal information systems, including LCD displays for passengers,
- passenger ticketing – both self-service at ticket validators and ticket sales from the driver,
- display of connection details and information on transport changes for drivers,
- priority for public transport vehicles at junctions and automatic control of level crossings,
- voice and data communication with the control centre,
- control of CCTV systems and receipt of commands from visually impaired passengers.
The EPIS 4.1 on-board computer can be used on buses, trolleybuses and trams, including coupled and bidirectional trainsets.
